How to Become a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP): Training, Pay and Applications

Mental Health Jobs · 29/09/2026

Psychological wellbeing practitioners (PWPs) are one of the most popular routes into NHS psychological work, and one of the most competitive. NHS Talking Therapies is expanding to deliver 915,000 courses of treatment a year by 2028/29 (NHS England), so services recruit trainee PWPs several times a year in line with university intakes.

What PWPs do

PWPs assess people with mild to moderate anxiety and depression and deliver low-intensity CBT-based interventions: guided self-help, behavioural activation, graded exposure and similar techniques. They work by phone, video, face to face and in groups, with high caseloads and regular supervision.

Entry routes

  • Postgraduate certificate: for graduates of any subject.
  • Graduate-level certificate: for people without a degree who can show they can study at that level.
  • Apprenticeship: available in some areas.

Training follows a national curriculum accredited by the British Psychological Society and usually takes about 12 months, combining university teaching with supervised practice (NHS England).

Pay

Trainees are usually employed at Band 4 (£28,392 to £31,157 in 2026/27) and move to Band 5 (£32,073 to £39,043) on qualifying. Course fees for NHS-funded places are paid for you.

What makes a strong application

  • Relevant experience supporting people with mental health difficulties, paid or voluntary
  • Understanding of the stepped care model and low-intensity CBT
  • Evidence you can manage a busy caseload, record accurately and use supervision
  • Values: compassion, inclusion and resilience

Rules to know

If you started PWP training after September 2018, you normally need two years' post-qualification experience before you are eligible for NHS-funded high-intensity CBT training. A separate rule from April 2022 means you generally can't get NHS funding for another psychological professions training for two years after completing one (NHS Health Careers). Plan your career timeline with this in mind.

Where it leads

Senior PWP (Band 6), lead PWP and management roles, specialisms such as long-term conditions or perinatal care, and training as a CBT therapist, counsellor or psychologist.
